The Black Carriage that is based off the Surrey Carriage with fringe top was introduced to America around 1872 and was very popular rather quickly mostly for families and especially those found with modest outcomes as it was found affordable as they were very inexpensive compared to other carriages and rather liked the ability to carry multiple passengers.
A very distinguishing feature of this carriage is the fringed canopy top and became iconic rather quickly due to the popularity and sight of it. Most would also refer to this carriage and call it “station wagon” of their popular era coming out because of the many families that adored it and found it pleasurable for outing and notable transportation.
Later in the 1900’s it was famously celebrated in a song that was part of the play “Oklahoma!” and they called this song “The Surrey with the Fringe on Top".
