Horses in Arizona trace their lineage to Spanish explorers and missionaries who introduced them in the 16th century. In the 1800s Arizona, working and wild horses were prevalent while wild herds being descendants of Spanish Mustangs that were brought by explorers and missionaries.

There are more than 400 different horse breeds and during the centuries horses have been bred to evolve their kind and to serve different purposes, so every breed has a purpose and their own personality. The five categories for horses are draft horses, warm bloods, light horses, gaited horses, and ponies.

Horses can serve many purposes throughout their lives and during these times most were considered “working horses” with ranchers, settlers, and explorers and were used for transportation, agriculture, and many more tasks. Horses were popular to be sold at auctions among many other livestock as well.
