His story starts on the 1st of September 1862 when he got in the lines of General Kearny. He told the story to his brother in a letter which explains all that he did. In 1863, he became sick of a fever and went back to his home in Georgia. He later started working as a policeman. In 1875, he moved with his family to Texas and Heck became a guard for the railroad. After that he was promoted and became a railroad detective and worked for the Fort Worth Detective Association.
In 1889, with two other detectives, they became a trio which was named “Three Guardsmen" and they brought back law and order in the Indian Territory. Moreover, they captured more than three hundred outlaws. In August 1896, he tackled down an outlaw: Bill Doolin and killed him.
After that, he went to Oklahoma in a little town named Lawton where he will resign as a deputy to become the first chief of police in Lawton town. He worked seven years as the chief of police, but when his health started to decrease he had no choice but to stop his activities. Heck also played in a silent movie “The Bank Robbery” in 1908, showing that he isn’t just a law man.
He ended up dying the 14th August of 1912 due to Bright’s disease, which was a kidney disease.
