Hello Cowboys, Pioneers, Outlaws and, Totem Bearers and welcome to the 1st edition of Wild West Characters. In every edition, I will briefly go over a bit of who the character is, one of their adventures(or doings) and a small reveiw on them as well. These characters are a wide range from the history of the Wild West and I can't wait for y'all to learn just as much as I did about these rootin' tootin' characters.
Today's review is on Calamity Jane so sit back, get comfy, and ready to read a bit about her! Enjoy!
Martha Jane Cannary, or more known to be Calamity Jane born in 1852! The first woman to be talked about here in this blog series and a lovely honor to talk about her too! Who was she exactly?? She was a frontierswoman who worked hard, went against gender norms, and even popped up in Buffalo Bills show! Supposedly she had also been a scout in a war just after she had one of her 2 children. .
Calamity Jane was born in Missouri where she had 5 siblings, she was the oldest. She was an orphan and was hard working growing up and throughout her life. She wore mens clothing, hence forth the nickname, Calamity Jane. Though it is a bit of a debate still of how she actually got her nickname.
Calamity Jane took care of her 5 younger siblings after their parents died. Their father moved them out to Salt Lake City in Utah, but when he died when she was only 14 years old, it was time for Miss Jane to take over. She took care of her siblings as they traveled and she worked in any place she could find so she could make some money to support herself and her siblings. Once her and her siblings were old enough, she went off to do new things as did her siblings. Calamity's doings were found mainly out in the Great Plains. She had gown a deep love for whiskey and other drinks that consisted of alcohol, this was known to be an addiction of hers.
Just like Buffalo Bill, Miss Jane's death was due to a natural cause, pnemonia in the year 1903. She fell ill so she wanted to get back to the Black Hills, once arriving being helped to a hotel quickly by townsfolk. She'd sadly died just before doctors could arrive. A sad loss for many who loved her that day. Shortly before her death, she cared for miners who were quarantining due to a smallpox epidemic and children and other adults facing bacterial diseases over in Deadwood, South Daktoa.
What a strong woman! She was caring despite loving to drink. Personally rating, I think she's a 7/10! I think it'd be interesting to find out more of her doings, perhaps a trip to a local historian would be nice... She must have more out there about her adventures as quite honestly there seems to be so little.
That concludes todays brief learning about the famous Calamity Jane herself! Hope you all enjoyed!! Stay tuned for the next volume where another wild west character will be talked about! :)
