Born Bartholomew Masterson in 1853, Bat had been a fan of the West at a young age. He worked as a buffalo hunter, scout, and gambler and quickly got a reputation for quick wit and an even faster draw. However, Bat Masterson's biggest success was in Dodge City, Kansas, because the town was being plagued by gun violence and overall lawlessness.
In 1878, Bat Masterson became a deputy marshal in Dodge City under the legendary Wyatt Earp where he played his role in bringing order to the chaotic town. His reputation as a fearless lawman and crack shot helped to lower violence and keep the peace.
Bat Masterson's time as a lawman in Dodge City was relatively brief, but it was more than enough to make him famous. He moved on to a career in journalism, writing article and columns about his Wild West experiences. He also became a celebrity by appearing in Wild West shows, where he was telling the tales of his adventures to the audiences.
Bat Masterson's ability to spin a good yarn proved to be valuable when radio was about to become a thing. In the 1940s, he hosted a popular radio show titled "The Adventures of Bat Masterson."
