For crimes against the State
Butch Cassidy, alias Robert LeRoy Parker was born in Beaver, Utah on April 13, 1866 he died in Tupiza, Bolivia on November 6, 1908, was a famous American train and bank robber, and the leader of a band of criminal outlaws known as the "Wild Bunch" in the Old West - it is important not to confuse it with the original Wild Bunch, from which Cassidy's gang took inspiration.
His first recorded crime occurred around 1880, when he stole a pair of jeans. A shop owner pressed charges, but the future outlaw was acquitted.
Since leaving home as a teenager in search of work, Cassidy, then still known as Parker, held a variety of jobs on ranches and dairy farms. He spent time working as a butcher in Rock Springs, Wyoming. He was later charged with the theft of a horse, beginning a life as a fugitive.
He is believed to have been involved in his first bank robbery in 1889, when he and three others absconded with more than $20,000 from a bank in Telluride, Colorado. In 1894, he was convicted of horse theft and sentenced to two years in prison, although he was released 18 months later.
Along with the Sundance Kid, he belonged to a gang consisting of Elzy Lay, Matt Warner, Harvey "Kid Curry" Logan, Ben "Tall Texan" Kilpatrick and Will Carver. Dubbed the Train Robbers Syndicate, the Hole in the Wall Gang and The Wild Bunch, the gang robbed trains, banks and mine wage remittances in the Rocky Mountain West.
They called themselves James Ryan and Harry Place and sought a place to raise cattle and live in peace. Under these names they concealed their identities Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, the notorious American raiders who settled in Patagonia in the early 20th century, lived as peaceful neighbours, and returned to the path of crime to end up dead in a shootout in San Vicente, Bolivia, on 6 November 1908.
Cassidy, and Sundance Kid, landed in Buenos Aires in March 1901, after leading a legendary gang, the Wild Bunch, known for their robberies of banks and railway companies. They were accompanied by a young woman in her early twenties, named Ethel or Etta, a schoolteacher or a prostitute, Sundance's companion.
Now that you know a little about Wild West treasure hunting, let's do some little interactive activities.
