West End: Corrals
Hello ladies & Gentlemen!

This week I'll be talking about the corrals in the West End. Now I know you all must be wondering who I am. My name is Josie Carter I am an assistant instructor for handiwork and crafting along with Medicine. You will see me running around the West End.

Now this week I come to you with infrastructure about the corrals that hold our Horses and other livestock. During this time it was also used for branding animals. The corrals were placed by water for the animals. It was also used for sorting livestock. Corrals were basically a fundamental part of the mid west in the 1800's. It was the embodiment of resources and hard work as well. Corrals were developed by the railroad system to transport livestock, construction, materials and so on.

The corrals are a wider domain than others may think, especially when in remote areas that are away for miles, even days from the main ranch(s) headquarters. The pens (corrals) for ranch operations were very crucial for branding, sorting, and loading cattle among many other livestock.

It was found that the material that was typically used to make sturdy and structured corrals such as wood, stone, or even sod but of course it depended on the region and what available resources they had in order to make them.

Another small fact to add that many did not know is many corrals even included water sources like wells with windmills or even ponds as a way to provide for both livestock and townsfolk such as cowboys that were working with them.

Overall, corrals across the world but especially in Arizona during the 1800s and on have shown and became a huge iconic symbol of the Old West as it represents the rugged individualism for each stand point they can be found from many different towns, the hard work that was put into it diligently by the workers that helped build them, and the vast landscapes of the era.

Hope you enjoyed this! Thanks for reading!
