Buffalo Bill
Greetings everyone!
William Frederick Cody better known as Buffalo Bill was born in Le Claire, Iowa Territory February 26,1846 on a farm to his parents, Isaac Cody (Father) and Mary Ann Bonsell Laycock (Mother) and it was said Mary moved to Cincinnati to teach school and there she has met and married Isaac.
Buffalo Bill was an American soldier, bison hunter, and showman. Although he was born in Le Claire, Iowa Territory he lived for several years in his father’s hometown in Mississauga, Ontario before the family returned to the Midwest and eventually settled in Kansas Territory.
His father, Isaac Cody went to Cleveland, Ohio to organize a group of thirty families to bring back to Kansas to add to antislavery population and during his return of the trip he had unfortunately caught a respiratory infection that was from an lingering effect of a stab wound from a man he argued with in a saloon as well as complications from Kidney Disease which led to his untimely death in April 1857.
After his fathers unfortunate death the family suffered financially. During the age of 11 Bill worked for the freight carrier Russel, Major, and Waddel as a “boy extra”. He would deliver messages on horseback between drivers and workmen. He joined Johnston’s Army as an unofficial member of the scouts. During a war in Utah he began his career as an “Indian Fighter”.
At the age of 14 during the year 1860, Buffalo Bill caught “gold fever” as news broke out of gold at Fort Colville and the Holcomb Valley Gold Rush that’s in California. However, on his way toward the goldfields he had met with an agent of the Pony Express and eventually signed with them and was given a job as rider, he built several stations and corrals. Unfortunately when his mother became ill he stopped working to be by her bedside. Buffalo Bill had many jobs during his time such as trapper, bullwhacker, Fifty Niner that was in Colorado. Pony Express rider and began in 1860, wagon master, stagecoach driver and even a hotel manager but it was hard for historians to document them some even think he may have fabricated some for publicity purposes.
In 1866 he reunited with a friend, Wild Bill Hickock in Kansas and had become a scout. They have been known to be friends for decades.
Also sometime in 1866 he married Louisa Frederici on March 6 and were married until he died in 1917 and they had 4 children together.
Buffalo Bill was known for many things throughout his days of his life but the most he is known for even to have a nickname to stick with him for life which he is known by throughout history is of course “Buffalo Bill” which is a nickname he received after the American Civil War when he had a contract given to supply Kansas Pacific Railroad works with buffalo better known as American bison meat. He was known to have purported to have killed 4,282 buffalo in just eighteen months between the years of 1867 and 1868.
On January 10, 1917 while visiting his sister, Buffalo Bill unfortunately died due to kidney failure. Many tributes were made, by King George V and even President Woodrow Wilson, his loss was known and found unfortunate by many. Due to his passing during the winter he wasn’t able to be buried where he originally planned to be as the spot was impassable so instead he was buried in Lookout Mountain.
