Cowboy Books
Greetings everyone!
Making history is one thing, but making history and a cowboy writing a book is a completely different story. Let’s skim through some cowboy books and see what kind of novels they came up with and graced us to read for many many years. Maybe you have read or even heard of these great reads!
Lonesome Dove that is written by Larry McMurty is said to be a legendary novel about the Old West and dare we call it iconic. It is about ex rangers Gus and Call about their adventure going for one last cattle drive. Once you get to reading this cowboy book however, you realize it's about a fading frontier, their brotherhood bond, and of course the spirit of a true cowboy. This is a true favorite by many cowboys and those who love the American West.
All The Pretty Horses is written by Cormac McCarthy and in the novel it takes place in 1949, the main character is a 16 year old boy, John Grady Cole who faces his grandfather's ranch and takes on a pending sale all while it being an increasingly modernized country. John makes the decision for himself and leaves to the south of the border in seeking a more fulfilling life for himself which is working on a Mexican cattle ranch. A dream that seems great to many however, is paid for in blood. If you bestow your eyes on this one and let your mind wrap around it, you will realize within this cowboy book it shows the realities of life within the West.
Riders of the Purple Sage is written by Zane Grey is known as a classic as there is romance and fulfilling adventure. Lassiter who is a gunman known by many and is famous for being a gunman struggles to withdraw Jane Withersteen whom is a rancher from a religious group who is very controlling. This cowboy book is known as the first novels of many within the Western genre. It proves an authentic read for a lone gunman hero with excellent landscape imagery and shows the dramaticness between good and evil.
The Time it Never Rained is written by Elmer Kelton and in this cowboy book it takes place in the 1950’s in Texas. Many dangers come and go such as bandits, rustlers and so forth but the enemy in this book is drought. The Western town is dying before everyone's eyes and the government won’t do anything. Elmer Kelton paints an all too real picture within his writing that some say they can even feel it within their hearts and even eyes.
Hope you enjoyed reading this, until next time!
