Wild West Duels
Greetings everyone!
Have you ever heard random shots then one fleeing or people screaming? Maybe… Sometimes maybe not. Many think of it as a Wild West Duel, what is a Wild West Duel exactly? Well, let’s get into that matter then, not literally either, please.
A “Wild West Duel” which is rare was known as a violent act which can lead to a fatal confrontation that can also be known as “Eastern Duels” as well. What was the point of these? Usually they were known to “sort out” a debate or argument between two folks whether it was over money, honor, or a silly disagreement that just went too far such as an insult or even gambling that didn’t go as planned.
Eastern duels were different opposed to Western as the Western confrontations were known to be “quick draw shootouts” and some were even known to be “formal” and "informal" which were completely different but the same unfortunate outcome. Formal Wild West Duels had rules and even an “agreement” made by the matter of seconds and the informal were well… Not very planned.
Some could happen anyways at any time just like in the movies with the good ol’ town square or even outside the saloon, while also very rarely were private, very rare though happened in this type of way.
Wild West Duels were known to be a “quick draw” that happened suddenly such as “may the best man win” type of thing where if one can pull out their gun quicker, well, if they make the shot count win, as unfortunate as it may sound or could just be a chaotic shootout, guns blazing and bullets flying everywhere.
The end game for these duels were to end in death, but if for whatever reason that does not happen someone can have an injury sometimes life threatening, sometimes not.
These obviously solved or had an interesting “resolution” for the folks during this time even if it was harmful in the end somehow made sense to set differences.
An iconic Wild West quick draw duel that is known by many is between Wild Bill Hickok and Davis Tutt that took place in 1865 Springfield, Missouri. The story is Tutt had Hickok’s pocket watch and did not want to return it to him so the two stood at a distance before drawing their guns and Hickok not only shot, but killed Tutt.
Hope you enjoyed reading this, until next time!
