Gunfight at OK Corral
The Gunfight at the O.K. Corral
On October 26, 1881, in Tombstone, Arizona, a confrontation between lawmen and outlaws erupted into the most famous gunfight in American history. Lasting only about thirty seconds, the Gunfight at the O.K. Corral involved Wyatt Earp, his brothers Virgil and Morgan, and Doc Holliday on one side, facing Billy Claiborne, the Clanton brothers, and the McLaury brothers on the other.
Three men died and three were wounded in those brief, violent moments. But the aftermath — the Earp Vendetta Ride, the trials, and the legends that grew from the event — lasted far longer than the gunfight itself.
The Key Players
Wyatt Earp was serving as a deputy when tensions between the Earps and the Clanton-McLaury gang reached a breaking point. Doc Holliday, a dentist turned gambler and gunfighter, stood with the Earps despite his failing health. The Cowboys, as the outlaw faction was known, had been terrorizing Cochise County for years.
