Wild West Towns
Legendary Towns of the Wild West
The frontier towns of the American West were places where fortunes were made and lost, where justice was dealt at the end of a gun, and where ordinary people became legends. Each town had its own character, shaped by the people who built it and the conflicts that defined it.
The Most Famous Towns
Tombstone, Arizona is perhaps the most iconic Wild West town, famous for the Gunfight at the O.K. Corral and the Earp brothers' war against the Cowboys. Dodge City, Kansas was the wickedest city in the West, a cattle town where cowboys, gamblers, and outlaws collided. Deadwood, South Dakota sprang up during the Black Hills Gold Rush and was home to Wild Bill Hickok and Calamity Jane.
Boomtowns and Ghost Towns
Virginia City, Nevada boomed with the Comstock Lode silver discovery. Abilene, Kansas served as a major cattle town terminus. Many of these settlements grew explosively and then faded just as quickly when the mines ran dry or the railroad moved on. Learn about the frontier's rich history in our lexicon.
