Wild West Weapons
Weapons of the Wild West
The weapons of the frontier were more than tools — they were symbols of power, survival, and identity. In an era when the law was distant and danger was ever-present, a reliable firearm could mean the difference between life and death.
Iconic Firearms
The Colt Single Action Army, known as the Peacemaker, became the definitive revolver of the West. Adopted by the U.S. military in 1873, it was carried by lawmen and outlaws alike. The Winchester Model 1873, dubbed "The Gun That Won the West," was the most popular lever-action rifle of the era. The Remington Model 1858 and the Smith and Wesson Schofield were also widely used across the frontier.
Beyond Firearms
Cowboys and frontiersmen relied on more than guns. Bowie knives served as both tools and weapons. Tomahawks were used by Native Americans and adopted by some settlers. Dynamite, invented in 1867, found its way into mining and, occasionally, into the hands of outlaws. Learn more about frontier equipment in our lexicon.
